This was a great course to take to start my MAED program. This class was all about learning to work with other people, especially in a school setting. Clear communication, listening, sharing responsiblity, and working to reach a common goal were all topics discussed in this course. I am not sure if this course is still offered, but I learned a lot about becoming a leader from this course.

How does leadership impact reaching a desired outcome? That is what this class is about. In this class you take a look at different types of leadership and the possible outcomes they can produce.  Perhaps the best part of this class deals with how effective leadership can turn an organizaiton in to a more positive direction.

This class was a simple introduciton in to the world of education. I was able to discuss ideas such as where education is today, where it was in the past, and where we are headed with my classmates. We also looked in to the impact that different outside influences had in the wold of education. This class helped me understand myself as a teacher, and why I do what I do.

My MAED Journey

Below is a list of courses that I was enrolled in while completing the MAED program at Michigan State University. If you click on the name of each course, you will be brought to the course description. While completing this program I picked two focus areas. If there is an image of people working together, that symbolizes my school leadership focus, while anything dealing with athletics symbolizes my focus on sport leadership and coaching. Images of books represent required courses or electives.

Fall 2012

Spring 2013

Summer 2013

Many students struggle with reading and writing, this class helps you learn how to better prepare yourself to reach these students. We worked on assessing reading levels, creating lesson plans to help these students, and evaluating different reading and writing programs for effectiveness. I also took this class because it met the requirement for the Michigan Reading Requirement for teachers. The bottom line is, literacy is important, and I must help my students in any way possible.

Perhaps my favorite class. This class helps coaches, administrators, or recreational leaders to develop programs for youth that have a positive impact on children. Too many athletes are experiencing "burn-out" when it comes to athletics. This class teaches you how to develop and lead programs that will keep children interested in continuing participation.

Fall 2013

Spring 2014

Everyone is different, this includes the students and families that enter our classrooms each day. This class deals with making everyone that enters your classroom feel comfortable and safe, while helping them learn. Schools should be a place where we can learn from our differences rather than be seperated by them. Minimizing these differences is what this class is all about.

Summer 2014

In order to reach students, the classroom has to be managed properly. This class takes a look at best practices and research based practices that help teachers maintain control of their classrooms. When behavior is under control, that is when true learning can take place. Even though I have been teaching for a few years, this class provided me with a few tools I can use in my own room.

This class has everything a coach needs to know about how to help athletes perform at their peak. It deals with knowing how the body moves, different body systems, and injury care/prevention among other topics. By looking at their athlete's movements, coaches can fix form and help athletes move more efficiently. This will in turn, create better results, a coach's goal.

Spring 2015

Being a coach or athletic administrator may lead to legal issues. In this class we discussed certain "hot topics" in athletics. These are the topics most associated with law suits. Those in charge have certain obligations to keep athletes safe, equipment up to date, create equal opportunities, etc. Learning how to look out for these issues can save money, jobs, while helping athletes stay safe.

Capstone Seminar
Dr. M. Koehler

This class is designed to put a finishing touch on your program. Through discussion and reflection students take a look back at the work that was done to complete their masters program. It is expected that each student create a electronic portfolio of their work and reflections. This portfolio can be used as a profesional resource to showcase their accomplishments.
